Wales Lodges & Log Cabins

Wales is the third largest nation in the group that makes up the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Bordered, on its Eastern landward side, by England and by the Irish sea on it's Western edge, the country protrudes out to the west from the main body of the British Isles. With a proud heritage, and it's own ancient language, the principality has had a long history of self determination as well as periods of conquest and occupation by, in particular, the English. A prominent reminder of the English conquest during Medieval period, is the number of fortified castles, built by, in particular, Edward 1st of England. Erected chiefly in the latter stages of the 13th century. Castles such as Caernarfon, Caerphilly and Conwy, amongst others, still dominate the landscape to this day. The most mountainous areas of the country lie in the North and West of Wales, and it is in these areas that the Welsh language has survived and indeed flourished over recent years. In all, around 20% of Wales now lies within the boundary of one, of the three, national parks. Snowdonia, lying in the North West is where the highest peak in Wales - Mount Snowden - is situated and the area is a magnet for adrenalin seekers such as mountain climbers and all terrain cyclists. The landscape sweeps down towards the sea with the charming seaside towns of North Wales, not too far away. On the Western edge of Wales lies the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park with it's stunning coastal scenery of rugged cliffs and sandy beaches. There is a wealth of wildlife to be seen and the area offers natural habitats to a wide range of species. Enjoy some of the finest beaches in the UK or get active and take in some of the fine surfing or hill climbing. The third of the Welsh national parks is the Brecon Beacons, lying to the South West. Stunning scenery abounds with gorgeous waterfalls, sweeping valleys and pretty Welsh market towns and villages. To the extreme South of the country the area know as “The Valleys” is still shaped by the relics of the mighty coal mining industry that once dominated the area. Pit villages, built for the mine workers, still wind down, ribbon like, down the vales and away from the former collieries. This area still has strong traditions and a proud heritage stemming from the the times when thousands of workers were employed in the industry. The two largest cities in Wales, Swansea and Cardiff, lie on the southern Coast. Both Cities have enjoyed something of a renaissance in recent years and attract a growing number of tourists. Cardiff, the capital of the Principality, is now a modern and vibrant City with a wealth of sights and attractions to offer. There are excellent Hotels, restaurants, markets and galleries, just as one would expect in a contemporary, European Capital City.
