The county of Nottinghamshire is situated in the East Midlands of England. The administrative capital is the city of Nottingham which has many attractions for the tourist. Nottingham is great for sports fans, having two professional football teams Nottingham Forest and Notts County, a successful ice hockey team the Panthers as well as a first class cricket ground at Trent Bridge hosting both county championship and international Test matches. At the start of October Nottingham holds its famous Goose Fair each year with over five hundred attractions including white knuckle rides, big wheel, dodgems and all the traditional favourites. While in the city be sure to visit what is reputed to be the oldest inn in the country – Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem which appears to be part inn part museum inside. Nottingham Castle is a wonderful 17th century ducal mansion built on the original site of the medieval castle. It currently hosts the city’s premier museum and art gallery. Think of Nottinghamshire and one is bound to spring to mind – Robin Hood, the outlaw who robbed the rich to give to the poor and is well known throughout the world thanks to the many films and television series about him and his merry men. Their hideout was in Sherwood Forest and the visitor centre at Edwinstowe has a Robin Hood exhibition and visitors can walk through the woods to see the famous Major Oak which the outlaw is said to have hid inside the trunk to evade the Sheriff of Nottingham’s men. Other attractions in the county include Clumber Park, a National Trust property which is an ideal site for a family picnic over looking the lake. Birdwatchers and lovers of the outdoors will enjoy visiting the Attenborough Nature Reserve which is a few miles to the south west of Nottingham.
