Details for Bournemouth Natural Science Society & Museum

For anyone taking a holiday on the south coast of the county of Dorset who wants to visit somewhere different for a half day we can recommend the Bournemouth Natural Science Society & Museum.

This registered charity was formed in 1903 and provides visitors with an interesting and informative experience. Situated on the edge of the town centre the society is based in a grand Victorian grade II listed building and holds a regular programme of events throughout the year. These include lectures by experts in the field of natural science, field trips and exhibitions. The museum has a well established collection of natural history items which include specimens of rocks, fossils and minerals in addition to many birds, mammals, eggs, reptiles and plants.

The Egyptology exhibition is always popular with visitors and as its centrepiece there is a sarcophagus which contains a two and a half thousand year old mummy. Children love to get involved with the hands on exhibits and on the museum's open days they can experience at first hand plenty of insects and invertebrates to hold and study.

As part of our family section the society has launched its ‘Young Explorers' group in 2016. This gives youngsters between the ages of seven and twelve the chance to get involved in Natural History and learn about this fascinating subject with plenty of talks throughout the year on a variety of subjects including the Victorians, dinosaurs, maritime studies, ornithology and the weather.
