Have you ever watched one of the Bear Grills' type television programmes on survival in the great outdoors and wondered what the best way would be to learn the bushcraft skills needed to survive.

Well, the answer is to head to Cornwall and the Footsteps of Discovery Survival Matters centre situated roughly midway between Truro and St Austell. The centre has its own 75 acre wood where groups can experience hands on activities in bushcraft, map reading, tracking and survival skills. Learn how to start a fire without any matches, how to build a shelter from materials found in the woods, and various other skills including hunting and trapping techniques. The centre offers various courses from a six hour survival ‘taster' day up to a full week Survival course aimed at those with a more advanced level of skills. The centre has hosted many groups from all kinds of clients including the military. It is a great venue for a corporate or business day for companies to provide a team building course with a difference with the employees having to work together to complete tricky tasks and solve problems in an outdoors environment. It is one corporate day they are sure to remember.

The centre is very popular with youth groups, schools, universities and colleges both within Cornwall and further afield as it runs week long residential courses during the summer months. Young people are split into teams to compete in a survival relay which includes making stretchers, creating a rescue beacon, fire lighting and basic cooking.
