Details for Inigo Jones Slate Works

Located just a few miles south of Caernarfon and on the edge of Snowdonia National Park in North Wales is the Inigo Jones Slate Works. If you are holidaying in the area and fancy a different and interesting day trip then come to visit the workshop here and take a tour of the slate works.

We have been producing items from the five hundred million year old Welsh slate since 1861. Our workshop tours take place all year round except the bank holidays at Christmas. Watch the introductory video presentation to learn more about the works. See how our skilled slate works operators take the raw slate and then using machinery they cut, plane and polish it, before engraving it where necessary, and then finally finishing off the product by hand.

One of the early products produced by the works was slate fireplaces, and a 19th century example of one can be seen on the tour. Traditional slate memorials are still produced today although the lettering is now performed by machine, a far quicker process than by hand as it used to be done. Watch a letter cutting exhibition and then have a go at calligraphy yourself and engrave a piece of slate that is yours to keep. After the tour relax with a snack or drink in our café.

Slate products for use in the home and garden have become more popular over recent years and include hearths, flooring tiles and kitchen work tops. Smaller items such as wine racks, place mats, cheese boards, mirrors, clocks and lamps are also in demand. One of our latest products is slate speakers and speaker stands as they have been shown to improve sound quality. House names and numbers produced from the slate are also very popular nowadays.
