Details for The Helicopter Museum

Located in the south west of the country in the town of Weston-super-Mere in lovely Somerset is the Helicopter Museum. It is a great destination for a day trip if you are holidaying in the area, with loads of informative exhibits and displays that all the family will enjoy.

There are eighty aircraft on display and these include the G-Lynx , holder of the world speed record, a Russian Hind gunship, a ‘Huey' Bell UH-1H and two craft from the Queen's Royal Flight. The museum goes back as far as 1958 when the founder, aviation enthusiast and writer Elfan ap Rees began a private collection of rotor craft. This built up over the following decades as more aircraft were acquired and a volunteer group was formed to preserve the collection. The museum became a registered charity and was able to open fully to the public at Easter 1989. Since then there have been many more acquisitions of aircraft and improvements and extensions to the museum including a theatre, new offices and hangar extensions.

This is a great place for anyone with an interest in aviation. Different events are held throughout the year including flight simulation where visitors can try their hand at flying helicopters, jet planes and Second World War fighter planes. The museum holds helicopter flight experience days on dates throughout the year where visitors can take to the air for an exhilarating experience. It is advised to book tickets in advance as the flights are very popular. After touring the museum visitors can take a break in our Copter Coffee Café with a refreshing drink. Souvenirs of the day can be bought from the Heliworld Gift Shop which stocks everything helicopter related including model kits supplied from companies around the world, mugs, teddy...
